PREPARING YOUR FENCE IN READINESS FOR WOOD TREATMENT

1. Clean the surface of your fence before applying a cleaner – use a small amount of soapy water with bleach.
2. Using a stiff bristle brush, scrub the fence and remove any debris – ensure you are removing any mildew that has formed.
3. Rinse the fence – remove any soap/bleach with a high-pressure nozzle or pressure washer (this will help remove any excess or remaining dirt).
4. If the fence has previously been treated, you need to strip it back to bare wood – you can achieve this by sanding down the fence. You can use sanding paper or a sanding power tool to complete this.

WHEN SHALL I TREAT MY FENCES?

Choosing the appropriate time to treat your fences is essential for their durability. The summertime is a perfect time to carry out treatment due to the dry and warmer conditions. Choose a moderately average day without the weather being too hot or humid. If the weather is too hot, your treatment is at risk of drying too quickly and not offering full protection.

One thing to ensure is not to get the treatment wet, so if there is a forecast for rain, avoid completing the treatment and plan for a better day.

TOP TIP – Using a high-quality brush to treat your fence will make all the difference. This will ensure even coverage with no risk of bristles falling out. Are you planning on using a previously used brush? Be certain your brush has been cleaned thoroughly using thinner. Complete the same process once you have completed your fence treatment.

Tiling can be a frustrating job, the Big Spin Levelling system works perfectly on both ceramic walls and flooring tiles, helping you combat those difficult jobs. The Big Spin Tile Levelling System is a 2 part system for perfect tile-to-tile alignment and works by using a threaded spacer base paired with a Big Spin cap, by tightening the cap using the screw tread, you can achieve a flush surface.

Within the Big Spin Starter pack, you will get 100 Big Spin Spacer Caps, and 100 bases, making it easier to create a neat and tidy finish in any area of your home. You can also purchase the spacer and bases individually, both available in packs of 100 pieces.

This system will provide excellent performance when used in conjunction with tiling systems for optimal results, it is recommended that best results are achieved when paired with regular tile spacers for joints up to 6mm.

The beauty of the Big Spin is that it is capable of delivering excellent results on ceramic tiles such as Porcelain, Marble, and Stone up to 16mm thick.

Containing anti-scratching properties, providing a big spin to ensure the protection of your freshly laid tiles.

DIRECTIONS OF USE

Insert the threaded spacer base beneath each exposed edge of the tile, ensuring that there is contact between the spacer and the tile with no mortar in between.

Using your next tile, install tightly against the already positioned threader spacer base.

With your rubber mullet, begin to bed the tile into the mortar to release any trapped air. If you don’t have a rubber mullet at hand, you can use your hands to slide the tile back and forth.

Place the Big Spin cap on top of the threaded spacer base and spin the cap down to the tile surface. Continue to turn the cap as required until all the surfaces are flush with one another. 

After waiting for the mortar to cure, you can remove the caps and the threaded post by kicking, using a rubber mullet or a removal roller in the same direction as the grout joint. 

PLEASE NOTE:  This product is designed to avoid lippage and will not solve uneven floor problems, these must be levelled prior to laying the tiles.

HEADWEAR

1. Jigsaw

Designed to create precise cuts from a range of different angles such as straight crosscuts, curved lines, and scrolling lines. Commonly utilised to tackle materials like wood, plastic, metal, and ceramic. The JIGSAW reiterates the motion of a manual saw, with downwards-facing plates and a fitted jig for guidance to a perfect cut.

Super Sofia Visits Boys & Boden Chester

At the start of the year, our Chester branch welcomed VIPs Sofia and Meghan into the store. Dressed for the job, as a builder and firefighter, the team were on a mission to get some wood to make more boxes for Sofia’s CME therapy.

Helped by a friendly member of our team and under the supervision of their Dad, the mission was successful and the afternoon was spent supervising the construction process at home.

Sofia is 5 and lives in Chester. She has Diplegic Cerebral Palsy and her dream is to be able to walk completely independently. She is full of life and her visit, along with her sister, certainly brightened the weekend of our Boys and Boden team. Supporting Arts Connection - Cyswllt Celf's Welshpool Projects

Braving the half-term weather, the amazing team at Arts Connection Powys hosted an outside workshop as part of its Adventures in Nature projects. The day was a great success with the group building an amazing spiral herb garden and also a cosy bug hotel using materials donated by Boys and Boden.

The group also moved on to clear Pont Howell Park and have already planned more workshops in March which they will announce soon.

Arts Connection is a participatory arts organisation and registered charity based in Llanfyllin, Mid-Wales, serving North Powys and Wrexham communities and beyond. A unique idea to help fundraise for Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity, Keylite visited our Shrewsbury branch as part of their #KickItWithKeylite challenge. 

The challenge was simple, kick a foam ball through a Keylite roof window in the fewest attempts and help raise money for the Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity. Many regular and new customers took part and it was a great activity for a deserving cause.

CHESTER LITTLE EXPLORERS DONATION

Recently our Chester Boys & Boden branch donated a selection of timber stock to the Little Explorers Nursery at Lache Primary School in order for them to create a brand new playhouse to put in their outside space.

Much to our surprise, the week later after it was built, we were paid a visit by the very kind Little Explorers children and staff, and given a handcrafted thank you card and plenty of treats. Since then, we have received some heartwarming pictures of the children enjoying their new playhouse which can be seen above.

A VICTIM of theft in Shrewsbury has been given a helping hand from her community and local Boys & Boden store. On November 6, a neighbourhood woke to discover the fence panelling had been ripped off and stolen from the property of an elderly resident.

Shrewsbury Community Collects Funds for Vulnerable Victim

Outraged and saddened by the selfish act, the surrounding community took it upon themselves to help a vulnerable person in need. Neighbours Cari Jennings and Eve Taylor began collecting funds for a new fence, and within a matter of hours enough donations had been received to cover the cost of the new fence.

Along with the generous donations from friends, family, neighbours and supporters, Boys & Boden also pitched in. Hearing of the situation, Shrewsbury branch manager Patrick Chall took the decision for Boys & Boden to provide the necessary materials for the fence.
He said: “When we heard of the awful ordeal Margaret was going through we just had to step in.
“I’m really happy to see the new fence up and would like to applaud the local community for stepping up to help someone in need.”
With the fence covered, the donated money has been put towards a security system so that victim can begin to feel safe in her home once more.

The first step for painting your staircase is the most important because it dictates precisely what your staircase will look like. You must decide what colour scheme and design you wish to create.

Is your staircase ready to be painted? Is it all clean and sanded? If not, you may want to take some time to prepare the surfaces you intend to paint.
First off, a bit of an obvious one, there can’t be a carpet. 
Not unless you want your stairs to look like they were decorated by the guests at a 6-year-old’s birthday party on a sugar rush.
So if you do have a carpet, you will need to carefully remove it.
We recommend using pliers, a wonder bar, a utility knife, sandpaper, a putty knife and wood filler.
Starting at the top, free the carpet from the gripper bar with the wonder bar and start prying it off, 
being careful not to damage any surface that will be painted or visible.
If you are dealing with one long roll of carpet, slice it into sections with the utility knife as you go, to make disposal easier.
If there are any tack trips or grippers that you want removed, the wonder bar is going to be the best solution for them too.
Once you are down to the wooden surfaces and the carpet is out of the way, get to sanding. 
Remember to sand with the grain for a tidy and uniform finish. A sanding machine will make this task a lot easier.
Next use the wood filler to cover up any holes or damage from the carpet removal or general wear and tear.

Prime

Neglecting to prime is a big mistake when doing home improvements. Priming gives a sleek finish for the paint to take to without soaking into the wood. Once the primer has dried, go over it with some fine-grained sandpaper and wipe away any blemishes.
You are almost ready to pop open the paint lid. We recommend that you now mark every other tread lightly with pencil, and make sure any surfaces you don’t want paint on are well masked. If you have chosen to apply a stencilled effect, make sure the stencils are applied.

Paint

Now it is time to apply the first coat. Use a fine brush to get into any detailed areas and achieve a smooth finish. A roller can speed things up but be aware, rollers cannot reach tight corners and also have a habit of leaving a texture in the paint or even small bubbles. The best method is to apply the first layer with a brush. Further coats can be applied with a roller, but be aware that you may need to tidy it up with a brush afterwards. You will need a minimum of two coats for a finish that lasts.

As you finish the first step, you may remember that we recommended marking every other tread. If this staircase is the only access to a floor, you will want to skip these treads until the rest of the stairs have had their final coat. This is because floor paints need about a day to dry thoroughly, and if you do the entire staircase at once then you are going to be stranded at one end of it for a day. Apply coats in batches and you will still be able to get about.

Once the flight is fully dried, remove any masking or stencils and congratulations, you have successfully painted your stairs.

Sheet materials are extremely versatile and are used in almost all forms of construction.

Plywood

Perhaps the best known sheet material derived from wood, bar perhaps paper,
plywood has some outstanding qualities that justify its 200 years of popularity.
An engineered timber, it is made from thin layer of wood veneer, also known as “plies” that are lain on top of one another.
Each layer is rotated by up to 90 degrees, this keeps the grains crossed to ensure strength.
This strength also keeps warping to a minimum and decreases the chance of splitting when nailed, tacked or screwed;
making plywood an extremely versatile construction material.

The main disadvantage of plywood also happens to be one of its strengths.
The layers that provide rigidity have the added downside of allowing water in that compromises the material

The weight and general qualities of blockboard are dependent on the core, though it is usually a light softwood.
It is best used inside and has a pretty good resistance to warping, meaning it is good for doors, furniture and shelves.

One of the down sides to blockboard is that it is not as strong as other sheet materials like plywood,
this is due to the centre being made from one layer of softwood blocks.
It is also possible for the blocks to separate when nails or screws are driven into the material at points where the blocks meet.
This can lead to internal voids and weakens the material overall. Though, if nails are inserted at the correct points, it holds them exceptionally well.

Chipboard

Chipboard, also known as particle board, or low density fibreboard (LDF) is another board with multiple advantages despite its low cost.
Chipboard has a very smooth texture on the sides thanks to it being made from compressed fibres and resin.
The edges are generally rough and require a veneer for an appealing finish.
A surprising property of chipboard is how it reacts to sound,
as it provides thermo-acoustic insulation, it is a favoured choice for the inside of speakers.
Frequently used in assembly furniture and kitchen worktops for its cost effectiveness,
chipboard is also more environmentally friendly than solid wood as the fibre used in its manufacture is usually recycled.
The issue with chipboard is that it is not very dense, so although it is light,
it is susceptible to transportation damage and is not ideal for load bearing purposes.
It is also not very good with moisture which easily causes damage.
So in summary, it is nice and affordable, but is not suited for the heavy duty stuff or dancing in the rain.

MDF

Much like chipboard, medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is a low-cost sheet material that is great at many things, but doesn’t do well in water.
Made from broken down wood residuals that have been mixed with resin and formed into a panel under pressure,
MDF is denser than plywood and lacks gaps and voids, unlike its close cousin, chipboard.
It has a very smooth surface and its consistency means it gives very neat lines when cut or routed.
The big downside hear is once again moisture;
without an uncompromising seal, it will deteriorate in water like a digestive in a cuppa.

Hardboard

Coming after LDF and MDF, we have HDF.
High-density fibreboard, also known as hardboard is much like MDF, yet is denser still.
It is made from compressed wood pulp that has been exploded and given
steam and heat treatments for a very fine finish that is tough, yet absorbent.
Hardboard can have either two smooth sides, or one smooth side and one rough fuzzy side, depending on what it is required for.
Whatever it is being used for, like most other board materials, if you don’t like the look you can apply a veneer to it.
As hardboard is denser still than MDF, it holds its form better and can be bought in thinner sheets.
Unfortunately for hardboard, it shares the same weakness as its low and medium counterparts, moisture again.
Though this can be overcome to an extent with tempering and oil treatments.

Cement board (AKA Tacboard, or Resistant Board)

The first board on this list that is not made from re-constituted wood fibre,
cement board, surprisingly enough, has cement in it.
The material is actually made from cement, fibres and sand which make it very heavy.
As it does not have a wood or wood fibre base, it is impervious to insects and rot decay.
It is also resistant to moisture, impact and extreme temperatures; this is really tough stuff.
The biggest down side here is that cement board, also known as fibre cement,
can be awkward to install due to its weight. More weight means more manpower, driving up costs and possibly time requirements too.

OSB Board

Going back to timber based materials for the final entry on this list, we have oriented strand board (OSB).
OSB, also known as flakeboard, sterling board or aspenite,
is made from compressed layers of wood strands (aka flakes) that are placed at specific angles to maximise its strength and load bearing capacities.
The angles of these strands give the board an axis of greatest strength, almost like a grain,
and because it is basically thousands of wooden flakes rammed together, it can be manufactured in massive sheets.
This process is more cost effective than making boards like plywood, so flakeboard is much cheaper.
OSB can be given special treatments to increase water resistance,
but you should know that the edges are prone to absorb water and weaken it.
For decorating, OSB provides a unique rustic look. It can be awkward to paint,
but with a primer and good oil-based paints, that hurdle is easily overcome.
